Orthodox Jews establish HaKibbutz HaDati, the Israeli movement of Orthodox Kibbutzim. Today, 18,000 members in 18 communities belong.

Boris Schatz ignores centuries of apathy and creates the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. His ambitious goal: "To train people in Jerusalem in crafts, [to] support Jewish artists, and to find visual expression... and to integrate it with the local culture of the Land of Israel."

Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut, perishes aboard the space shuttle Columbia, when it explodes on reentry to Earth's atmosphere. Ramon captured the imagination of all Jews by observing Shabbat and Kashrut in space.

Marc Chagall, a famous Jewish artist, dedicates his vibrant stained glass windows in the Abbell Synagogue at Hadassah Medical Center. The windows depict the 12 tribes of Israel. "This is my modest gift to the Jewish people," Chagall said, "[They] have always dreamt of biblical love, friendship and of peace among all peoples."

Kol Israel, the main broadcasting company in Israel, was formed under its original name, the Palestine Broadcasting Service (PBS). The first major radio broadcast made on Kol Israel radio took place a decade later when Ben Gurion read the Declaration of Israel's Independence.

Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem opens its doors. A ceremony held on this day was attended by one of the founding fathers of the school, Dr. Chaim Weizmann. Today, the school has over 24,000 students.

Maccabi Tel Aviv defeats Italy's Mobilgirgi Varese and is crowned the European basketball champion. That same year, Maccabi Tel Aviv had defeated the dominant team in Europe, Russia's Moscow C.S.K.A.

Izhar Cohen & Alphabeta win the Eurovision Song Contest, singing "A-Ba-Ni-Bi." The name of the song, which means "I love you," as well as the chorus, is written in "Bet Language," where every syllable is followed by a Bet. Israel again won the award in 1979 and 1998.

"Ashdod" becomes the first ship to fly the Israeli flag through the Suez Canal following the signing of the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. Egypt had regulated the traffic of the canal prior to the peace treaty, not allowing Israeli ships to pass through.

Professor Ehud Netzer discovers the tomb of King Herod in Herodion. King Herod was appointed by Rome as the King of Israel, and in this position, he funded the building of a number of projects, including the reconstruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the building of a fortress on the Mountain of Masada, and the founding of the city of Herodion.

Hadassah hospital in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem opens. Hadassah, which receives aid from the Jewish Woman's Zionist Organization in America, also called Hadassah, is the major hospital in Israel, saving thousands of lives there each year.

Six days after the end of the Six Day War, on Shavuot, the Old City opens to the public. For the first time in thousands of years, Jews can pray at the Kotel. At 4 AM, thousands entered the Old City and soon formed a minyan and began to pray. An eyewitness wrote: "I've never known such an electric atmosphere before or since. Holding aloft Torah scrolls, we swayed and danced and sang at the tops of our voices."

The Law of Return is enacted, ensuring that all Jews, no matter their background or current homeland, have the right to move to Israel and automatically become citizens. This law became important as Jews from Arab countries tried to find protection in Israel.

The Yarkon Water Project opens to supply water to the Negev desert in Israel. A predominantly desert climate, Israel always has a shortage of water. Because the larger bodies of water, such as the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, are filled with salt water, Israel needs to conserve its few sources of water, such as Lake Kinneret and the Yarkon and Jordan rivers.

A peace treaty is signed between Jordan and Israel. The treaty ends the state of war between the two countries, explicitly stating: "[Israel and Jordan] will develop good neighborly relations of cooperation between them to ensure lasting security, will refrain from the threat or use of force against each other, and will settle all disputes between them by peaceful means."
