I was born in Pennsylvania in 1781 and devoted my life to helping others. When I was only 20, I helped found a women’s charitable organization to aid underprivileged women and children. Later I started the first Hebrew Sunday School, which was specifically for poverty stricken children. I also started the first Jewish orphanage in Pennsylvania. In addition, I helped found the Female Benevolent Society, the oldest Jewish charity organization not run by a synagogue in the United States. I once said, “Piety, self-respect, and charity will… make our wilderness bloom.” Who am I?
