I grew up in Poland in the early 1900s, the daughter of Hasidim. While the boys received a thorough Jewish education, I watched the girls slip away from Judaism. To counter this trend, I educated myself and started teaching informal lessons to local girls. I founded the first Bais Yaakov seminary for girls in 1918. I withstood much criticism, and told my students, “Life may provide you with many trials and tribulations, but you are well-armed. Your fortification is fearing, loving, and serving God.” My legacy has paved the way for women’s Jewish education. Who am I?
