How can I help Israel?

Baba knows this:
Israel’s Declaration of Independence ends: “Our call goes out to the Jewish people all over the world to rally to our side in the task of immigration and development and to stand by us in the great struggle for the fulfillment of the dream of generations- the redemption of Israel.”

Three things you can do to help:

1. Keep informed about events in Israel. Get reports e-mailed to you from Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visit http://mfa. gov. il and click on “mailing lists.”

2. Monitor media bias against Israel. Visit www. camera. org for information.

3. Israel is facing an economic crisis partially due to the Intifada. Send a donation to your favorite charity in Israel.

Helping the Hungry

It’s estimated that 30 million people in the United States go hungry each day. Many hungry Jews are members of families that have fallen on hard times. In New York City, there are 420,000 poor Jews. Find out how many poor Jews there are in your community.

Two things you can do to help:

1. Label one shelf of your food pantry “Tzedakah Food” so your family will remember which items have been set-aside for tzedakah.

2. Visit www. mazon. org to find out how you can contribute 3% of the cost of any family simhah to feed the hungry.

Helping the Elderly
Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “The test of a people is how it behaves towards the old.”

Three things you can do to help:

1. Purchase large print editions of the prayer book for your congregation.

2. Start an inter-generational choral group or band.

3. Visit www. myriamsdream. org to learn how your synagogue gift shop can market products produced by the elderly.
